Vehicle Overview
Mazda's larger, more powerful replacements for the departed Protege sedan and Protege5 hatchback went on sale in the 2004 model year. Built on the same platform as the Volvo S40, the compact, front-wheel-drive Mazda3 displayed entirely different styling. A 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine went into the Mazda3 i sedan, while the Mazda3 s sedan and hatchback held a more powerful 2.3-liter four-cylinder.
Modifications are minor for the 2007 model year. The front bumper has been redesigned and fitted with square fog lamps, and the 16- and 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels also got a new look. The s sedan now employs LEDs for the rear combination lamps. Audio systems now have a standard auxiliary audio input for MP3 players, and the Mazda3 has 12-volt power outlets.
For 2007, a new gray cloth interior is available with select exterior colors. Both sedans and hatchbacks now have rear armrests with cupholders. A recess on top of the bumper has been added to make it easier to open the trunklid, and Mazda says the sedan's modified rear cargo area's side and end trim make it easier to load. The i sedan features newly designed gauges and a zebra-striped wood-finish dash trim.
The 2.3-liter s Grand Touring model includes heated leather seats, automatic headlights, automatic rain-sensing wipers and a trip computer. A moonroof, a custom-tuned Bose audio system and Sirius Satellite Radio are optional.
